Exponential Growth (Swedish Numerology III)

Swedish Numerology is a series of works about the transformation of the Swedish welfare state into a neoliberal utopia. The Swedish welfare system is being methodically dismantled with tax cuts and privatization, and whilst the country's wealth is redistributed to the 1%, attention is redirected to the crises of the day, be it "floods" of refugees, pandemics or war. Politicians from left to right all talk about investments in school and healthcare, but the yearly state budgets are saying something else. The numbers must somehow be mystical.
During the Covid-19 pandemic it became extremely evident what happens when you entrust public safety to private businesses. In 1993 Sweden had 4300 intensive care units with respirators, but in 2019 the number was down to 526. When quarterly reports are all that matter it is not profitable to provide safety just in case of some hypothetical crisis.

A single hit on a cymbal is repeatedly heard in the exhibition space at even intervals. Each hit represents another million SEK of the Swedish state budget invested in the military industry.
